I am an embedded software engineer by profession and an advanced Android user who knows a little more than many out there. I work on creating and promoting GCam APK which is a modified APK done to get several extra features on the stock app in Android. Basically this is done using reverse engineering the original app file. I work on publishing about GCam APK Port, custom ROMs and some Linux how-to guides. I use this YouTube Blue APK and the NewPipe APK as a daily Youtube apps.

Dalvik wouldn't matter anymore would it? Since it was replaced with ART (Android Runtime Environment) and everything... You'll still want to wipe the regular cache partition though when changing or upgrading ROM's, kernels, themes and font mods.

Yes, as memphisslim said that while upgrading a ROM you have to remove all the cache that belongs to previous firmware or ROM.
Sometimes the older cache data may prevent your new ROM from booting correctly or your new ROM may continue in indefinite boot loop.
There could be other possible side effects also.

Thanks memphisslim for the detailed explanation.
