If you don't have a custom recovery in your Moto X then have it first and then follow the instruction to upgrade your device to CyanogenMod 12.1.
Just to tell you, Android and hence CyanogenMod is running on Linux.

Required files for CyanogenMod 12.1 ROM installation:
First of all you have to get the below recovery flashable ROM zip files from the below locations.Always download the latest ROM file.
- CyanogenMod 12.1 ROM download link for Moto X 1st Gen
- Google Apps flashable zip download link
- If you want ROOT then the SuperSU package by chainfire
Installing CyanogenMod 12.1 ROM:
STEP 1:
Copy the ROM, GApps and SuperSU ROOT zip file to your phone(By using a USB cable or via adb push command). STEP 2:
Enter into recovery mode by pressing your device specific key combinations. Or else if you are on a pc, then type the following command:
$ adb reboot recovery
STEP 3:
If you have CyanogenMod 12 ROM then just wipe the Cache partition and jump to STEP 4. Wipe system partition, cache, data and dalvik cache (Only if you are coming from KitKat)
STEP 4:
Select the Install Zip from SDcard option. Select the CyanogenMod 12.1 ROM file, let the installation complete and then reboot.
Complete the initial setup, reboot to recovery and then flash the GApps package and reboot again to enjoy Android Lollipop 5.1 with CyanogenMod 12.1.
